The Tree

Ivy was rustling through her backpack, looking for her favorite purple jacket. When Amy called from outside her window, “Can you come over?” she asked. “Not today,” Ivy called back. Ivy quickly did her chores and had time to go outside.
The wind was blowing leaves everywhere. Her favorite tree stood in the middle of the yard. She right away felt a connection with the tree. She held her hands up into the air as leaves swirled about her and one yellow leaf landed in her hand. The leaf felt icy on her palm. When she touched the rake, the handle instantly froze. Her eyes sparked with excitement. “Did I do that?” Ivy gasped.
A huge breeze made a red leaf slap her in the face. It was warm to the touch and heated her whole body. She swung her arm out and shot a flame out of her hand. “Wow amazing,” Ivy said. Running toward the house, she slipped and landed in the dried up brown leave pile. She met Ash, her cat, at the door. Reaching down to cuddle him, she felt his body become lifeless. “Ash, please be ok? Oh no.” she sobbed. Carefully, she placed the cat in a shoebox and slid him under her bed. Still sobbing, she went to bed.
The cloudy morning made her sad. “Ivy, Amy is here.” Her mother called. Downstairs, her mother felt her head. “You feeling ok? You went to bed early. Have you seen Ash I can’t find him?” Ivy grabbed her friend’s arm and pulled her outside and told her what had happened. The girls stood by the tree and stared up at the different colored leaves, trying to understand what was happening. Ivy picked a red leaf and again shot a flame, burning the pile of raked leaves. “Get Ash,” Amy said. “I know exactly what to do. Try the green one.”
Ivy held her beloved cat as she reached for a green leaf. It was cool and suddenly Ash breathed.
